The Beginning

Jerry and I began this dream to travel about 32 years ago, and originally we planned to travel in a 32 ft. sailboat. Life's twists and turns, and one too many white-knuckle trips on Lake Michigan caused us to rethink the vessel.  We took to dry land in a motor home fondly called "The Whale."  Before now, trips were limited to when I could take time from work.  We took trips to CA and FL to visit family and friends and short trips to areas in the mid-west, but always on a schedule limited by too few vacations days and obligations of a house.

In the last seven months we sold the house (in three days); sold/gave away/ discarded a whole house full of things; moved into the Whale full time at the Elkhart, IN campground.  I retired, and Jerry retired a second time.  We plan to launch from Elkhart as of September 14, 2012.  It's hard to believe we will be traveling soon.  Many of our friends say they could not do what we are doing.  For most, giving up a house is a really big deal.  For us, it's been liberating.  Now, our house just has wheels.  The decision did come with some sacrifice though.  We both really had to do some soul searching when we listed our  non-negotiables.  I'm more amazed at what we don't need rather than what we do need.

It's been great staging this trip at the Elkhart Campground.  The owners, Bob and Gita Patel, are welcoming and so helpful.  The time has allowed us to get settled in.  More about plans and first legs of the trip soon...
